Skin Saver

Skin Saver: It’s summertime and that means we are all getting a lot of extra sun exposure- whether we are trying to or not! And as we all know, extra sun exposure means our skin is more vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun, like premature aging and skin cancer.  Did you know that Vitamin C Serum can act as a protective layer from the sun while also providing anti-aging benefits?? This secret is too good to keep to ourselves, so we are sharing our top 5 reasons why we love this stuff! Our colleague Bree has given us the rundown on this liquid gold, you don’t want to miss it!

Our top 5 reasons for incorporating Vitamin C into your daily skincare routine.

1. Glow You

Vitamin C is widely used for smoothing out the skin’s surface and improving texture to reduce dullness.  In turn, this gives the skin a youthful, glowing complexion.

2. It will Even You Out

Vitamin C is anti-inflammatory. This quality helps reduce redness, evens out skin tone and reduces the risk of bacteria spreading. Because of its anti inflammatory properties, it has been shown to treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions from acne to rosacea.

3. No Spotty areas!

Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanin is overproduced in certain areas of the skin. Main causes for hyperpigmentation includes sun spots, acne scarring, age spots and melasma. Vitamin C application has been shown to inhibit melanin production. This can help fade dark spots, lead to a more even-toned complexion and prevent new spots from forming!

4. Bye Bye Fine Lines!! Hello Firm, Beautiful Skin!

Vitamin C is commonly known to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that depletes over time for multitudes of reasons. Lower levels of collagen can lead to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Applying a vitamin C serum boosts collagen production to help soften current fine lines and wrinkles, while also being proactive in preventing new ones from forming.

5It’s like Sun Glasses for your Skin!

Vitamin C is known to fight off damaging free radicals by their powerful antioxidant properties. Free radicals are generated by our bodies when exposed to certain conditions such as UV rays, pollution, environmental stressors, diet, stress, and smoking, just to name a few. However, every villain needs a hero. Cue antioxidants! This natural occurring substance combats the over production of these free radicals. Pro tip: using Vitamin C under sunscreen will add an extra, powerful layer of defense from UV rays.

For an even greater Results…

Consider adding more vitamin C to your diet. You can do this through taking natural supplements, as well as incorporating Vitamin C rich foods to your diet: citrus, spinach, strawberries and broccoli. This healthline article had some great information about the benefits: Taking vitamin C orally can enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens applied to your skin for protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It does this by decreasing cell damage and helping the healing process of bodily wounds. Vitamin C can also help fend off the signs of aging because of its vital role in the body’s natural collagen synthesis. It helps to heal damaged skin and, in some cases, reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Adequate vitamin C intake can also help repair and prevent dry skin.

When choosing a supplement we recommend choosing a plant based supplement. Here at Face of Jules we always stock vitamins from Pure Synergy and highly recommend this company for their excellent quality and highly effective products.

Using Vitamin C Serum in your Daily Routine

Our estheticians recommend building up to a twice daily routine, especially for more sensitive skin. Try using the serum once every other day at first, and slowly build up to using every day and morning and evening. The jury is still out about the best time to apply, but we can think of it this way- using the serum in the morning will add protection from sun damage as well as create a “safety net” from free radicals.  Using the product in the evening will help repair the skin from any damage done during the day.

A Word to the Wise

Over time Vitamin C will oxidize, when it does it is no longer safe to use on your skin as it can create adverse effects (discoloring, etc.) We recommend finding a serum that is made with Vitamin E, this helps stabilize the Vitamin C and minimizes prolongs the life of the serum. When you buy the serum it should be light yellow color (almost clear). Immediately discontinue use of the serum if it has turned brown.

We hope you will enjoy the benefits of Vitamin C this summer and all year round!
